Andrew Perkins Labour Candidate for Fleet Central ward, Hart District Council.
I’ve lived in Fleet for many years with my wife, an NHS nurse. Our two children attended good local state schools. But if we allow the current shortage and cost of housing in Hart to continue, your children and mine will likely never be able to live and bring up a family here.
As Secretary of Fleet Cycling, I’m only too aware of potholes and the shortage of safe well-kept cycle paths. I support the Cycling UK Manifesto.
I commuted into London for many years, and am appalled at the continuous ticket price rises, as well as the poor state of connections to the station: expensive bus fares, dangerous cycle lanes, expensive parking.
Before retiring early, I helped businesses to improve their services and efficiency, while respecting their people. I’m now ready to work for change in Hart – will you vote for me?
What has Labour done recently for Hart?
Energy and food prices are rocketing and many people will struggle, while some will be faced with the terrible choice between heating and eating. As Chair of local Labour, I raised a petition last November (2021) which resulted in Hart Council providing £10,000 to Hart Foodbank.
Conservative-dominated Hampshire Council proposed massive cuts to health services in 2021, at a time of huge need. We in Labour campaigned through social media, and residents provided a huge response. The Tories were forced to back down on the cuts.
These achievements were from outside Hart Council – if we can get direct access to Council staff and other councillors, by having our own Labour councillors, we can achieve so much more.
Labour is On Your Side
On Thursday 5 May, we can change the course of our country, starting in our local communities. Britain can’t afford the Tories. Prices are going through the roof and wages are going through the floor. We’ve
seen the biggest drop in living standards since the 1950s. Taxes are the highest in 70 years. Britain deserves better than this.
It’s time to send the Tories a message on the cost of living crisis they can’t ignore. The more Labour voices there are in Local Government across the country, the stronger the message we send to the Conservatives that the British people deserve better.
And never let us forget, while we were separated from loved ones, Boris Johnson broke his own rules and partied. If you are sick of 12 years of Tory lies and 12 years of Tory sleaze and 12 years of Tory austerity, only a vote for Labour can make them sit up and take notice.
Only a vote for Labour can encourage millions across the country to believe that another way is possible.
My pledges to you
If elected councillor I will:
- Actively seek out the views and needs of local residents, for instance by holding regular surgeries to hear their concerns
- Work collaboratively with any other councillor who genuinely seeks improvements for the benefit of residents.
- Commit to protecting our environment by promoting the carbon neutral 2040 policy, a green house building programme, better waste recycling, and more EV charging points.
- Seek solutions to problems in Hart using Labour’s network of contacts from other councils and charities.
- Seize opportunities to improve the availability of housing, especially for those having the hardest time affording it.
- Seize opportunities to improve public transport and expand cycle-ways and footpaths.
It’s time for change
Thousands of new homes in the district have put enormous pressure on roads, GP and hospital services and damaged the natural environment. New homes built WITHOUT regard for the environment: no solar panels, heat pumps or gardens large enough to attract wild birds.
Yet Fleet town centre has not benefitted from the increased population: so many shops have closed. Public transport is inadequate or non-existent.
Hart councillors have conducted talking shops for years, but failed to take meaningful action. You deserve much better, and Labour is ready to serve Hart as it serves so well in Manchester, London, and so many places.
What will Labour do for you?
We care about the needs of all the community and we represent and will fight for the whole community: all ages, all creeds, all genders, all incomes.
We care about the environment and the world our children will inherit. It’s worth fighting for!
We work actively for you on local and on nationally important issues: the NHS, the economy, Social Care, Education, Equality, International Relations.
